This is such a fun season at our house! We have two birthdays, Christmas, and New Years in just over a month here, so I wanted to share the joy with a free Santa/ party hat for the Ursa Bear and Grinning Gator. Both patterns can be found on the Fostering Sewing Etsy Page: https://www.etsy.com/shop/FosteringSewing

I am also doing a holiday sale! 20% off all PDF patterns from November 22nd- November 29th.

Now on to details about the free pattern!

Materials needed:

Printed copies of the pattern:

A4 Santa/ Party Hat Pattern

US Letter Santa. Party Hat Pattern

Hat: Small piece of fabric that is unlikely to fray (I especially recommend fleece and felt)

Pom Pom: Small piece of fur, minky, or other fabric of your choice

A small amount of  stuffing (for the pom pom)

Matching thread

Optional: decorative trim, paint, glitter, etc. for additional details

Before you begin

Note that all pattern pieces have a 1/4” seam allowance. The sew line is marked by a dashed line on the pattern.

This pattern is designed to have a raw bottom seam. If you would like to use a fabric that requires a bottom hem, add seam allowance to the bottom, curved part of the hat (the part with no dashed line) or consider hemming with bias tape.

Prewash your fabric in the same way that you will wash your finished product (or run it through the washer and dryer just in case this happens to your finished plush).

Printing

Print the document at 100% or actual size.

Before cutting out pattern pieces, measure the 2” x 2” square. This will ensure that your pattern pieces are the right size. Then cut the pieces out on the printed lines.

Cutting the Pieces

Cut one hat piece from the main fabric and one pom pom from the fur/ accent fabric.

Creating the Hat

Fold the hat piece (right sides touching) and stitch along the dashed line in the pattern. You can machine stitch, hand stitch, and even glue along this line.

Trim the seam allowance at the top (point) of the hat to help create a clear cone shape.

Turn the hat right side out.

Creating the Pompom

Using doubled up thread (for added strength), do a loose running stitch along the dashed line marked on the pattern.
Once you have stitched all of the way around the circle, pull it partly closed.

Add a small amount of stuffing to the pompom.

Pull the pompom closed as much as you comfortably can and tuck the raw edge inside the ball.
Place the pompom on top of the hat and ladder stitch in place. This will cover any imperfections on the bottom of the pompom and on the top of the hat.

You did it!

Share your hats on the Fostering Sewing Patterns Facebook group  or on Instagram using #FosteringSewingPatterns
